A group of fans advocating for Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan’s inclusion in a farewell Test match was attacked by rival protesters in Dhaka. The “Shakibians” gathered outside Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Sunday, demanding Shakib’s return to the squad as the South African team trained nearby. The situation escalated when opposing protesters, armed with sticks and bamboo, confronted them. Police reported that army personnel intervened to restore order.
Shakib, who previously served in parliament for the Awami League, has been out of the country since July due to political unrest. Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board assured him of safety upon his return, he ultimately withdrew from the series over security concerns. Shakib expressed his disappointment, stating, “I was to return home … but now I don’t think I can,” citing the threats to his safety as a major factor in his decision.
