From the disappointment of losing the 2010 T20 World Cup final to being crowned champions in 2024, New Zealand’s Devine and Bates have experienced it all.
Amelia Kerr, whose outstanding performance in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final propelled New Zealand to victory, has credited her older teammates, Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates, for inspiring her to pursue cricket. In the final held in Dubai, Kerr scored 43 runs and took 3 wickets for 24 runs, helping New Zealand to a 32-run win over South Africa.
Reflecting on her journey, Kerr recalled watching the 2010 final, where New Zealand lost to Australia by just three runs. As a 10-year-old, this disappointment ignited her passion for cricket and her dream of winning the trophy alongside her idols. “I was inspired to be a White Fern watching that 2010 World Cup,” she said, expressing her gratitude for the support from Devine and Bates throughout her career.
Kerr finished the tournament as the leading wicket-taker, earning both Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament accolades, solidifying her status as one of New Zealand’s brightest cricketing talents.
