On October 16, Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health confirmed a cholera case in the Akkar governorate, marking the first since the previous outbreak ended in June 2023. This resurgence highlights increasing health risks due to ongoing conflict and deteriorating sanitation. Authorities are currently investigating the spread of the disease, including water contamination assessments and gathering samples from the patient’s contacts.
Dr. Abdinasir Abubakar, WHO Representative in Lebanon, noted the heightened risk of infectious diseases like cholera stemming from poor water conditions and the conflict’s impact. The WHO is prioritizing enhanced surveillance and sanitation efforts to curb transmission.
The ongoing conflict has strained Lebanon’s health system, exacerbating the challenges of overcrowded shelters and increasing displacement, which heightens cholera transmission risks. The 2022-2023 outbreak, the first in over 30 years, led to 8,007 suspected cases and 23 deaths, driven by economic decline and inadequate access to clean water.
In response, the WHO and the Ministry of Health are activating a preparedness plan, including contact tracing and environmental surveillance. They are also exploring the introduction of oral cholera vaccines in high-risk areas. Recent shipments of essential health supplies from WHO aim to support the ongoing response efforts and maintain essential health services.
