CAF President Promises Accountability After Nigerian Team’s Airport Incident
During the ongoing General Assembly, Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), addressed the recent controversy involving the Nigerian national football team at Al Abraq Airport in Libya. He emphasized CAF’s commitment to accountability and stated that proper actions would follow a thorough investigation into the matter.
The incident arose when Nigeria’s Super Eagles accused Libyan authorities of intentionally diverting their flight and causing a 14-hour delay. This disruption ultimately led the players and officials to refuse to participate in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya.

Motsepe cited a disturbing trend where national teams and clubs experience significant challenges upon arrival in foreign countries, including unnecessary document checks and unfounded health concerns about players. Following the incident, CAF confirmed that it was in communication with both Libyan and Nigerian authorities. The organization revealed that the situation had been referred to its Disciplinary Board for investigation. A statement issued by CAF assured that appropriate actions would be taken against any parties found to have violated CAF’s statutes and regulations.
