The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially awarded Nigeria three points and three goals following the abandoned Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya on October 15 in Benghazi. This decision came after the CAF Disciplinary Board’s investigation into the events surrounding the match, which Nigeria abandoned due to the poor treatment they received from the Libyan hosts.
The Super Eagles’ team faced substantial challenges, reportedly being stranded at an abandoned airport for almost a day. CAF ruled that the Libya Football Federation violated several regulations, including Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
CAF’s 5-point decision includes the following:
• The Libya Football Federation was found in breach of the African Cup of Nations Regulations and CAF Disciplinary Code.
• Libya’s forfeiture of the match results in a 3-0 victory for Nigeria.
• The Libya Football Federation must pay a fine of USD 50,000 within 60 days of notification.
• All other requests for relief were dismissed.
This ruling not only advances Nigeria in the qualifiers but also emphasizes CAF’s commitment to fair treatment and regulations compliance for all teams in the competition.
